| By Betty Cho Staff Writer Hai An Road in the Old Five Channels Community in Taiwan will be the site of the first street galleries in Taiwan. Formerly a commercial district, most storeowners have moved out and left the road lined with vacant and dilapidated houses.  “It is a desolate scene,” said some architects. “It needs a revival.” In this task of transforming the old community into a tourist attraction, architecture plays an important role. On either side, new structures will hopefully give it a facelift. “The Tainan City government has manifested their support for our suggestions,” said Curator Du Jhao-sian (杜昭賢). “Besides the participation of architects and artists, in rebuilding the community, we also need to rely on local residents to give us ideas on how best to accomplish this.” Community residents, architects and government officials have started meeting to discuss how to proceed. So far, the walls of seven buildings have been repaired and repainted. In time, those involved in the street revival would have the feeling of satisfaction when they see some art works from Lu Ming-de (盧明德) on display. Visitors could soon see Howard Chen's drawing pins or experience the art produced by some local artists. Chen Chi-nan praises this ‘civil aesthetics movement’ whose tangible product will be the “Street Gallery.” |
