Tamkang University Maritime Museum

The Tamkang University Maritime Museum is a five-story ship-shaped building located on the scenic Tamsui campus of Tamkang University in Tamsui Township.

Some 61 model ships are on display at the museum, including many replicas of classic sailing vessels from the golden era of navigation (15th to 17th century), as well as models of present day ships and a futuristic prototype propelled by super-conducting electromagnets. The ships of 14 countries are represented China, Norway, Russia, Denmark, Argentina, Holland, Germany, Britain, Sweden, Spain, Italy, France, Japan, Portugal and the United States.

The Tamkang University Maritime Museum was originally named the "Merchant Ship Hall," and was donated to the university as a training center for merchant marine officers by Y. F. Chang, group chairman of the board of trustees of Evergreen Group. The building provided facilities to simulate an actual seagoing environment, including an engine room and ships bridge fully equipped with authentic equipment used on merchant ships. In 1985, the Taiwan government decided to discontinue merchant marine training programs, and the last graduates of the "Merchant Ship Hall" received their diplomas in 1989. The facility was then refurnished and re-opened as maritime museum
on August 6, 1990.

Model ships are displayed on the first and second floors of the museum, while the third floor has a library of books on maritime technology and history, as well as audio-visual room where visitors can view regularly schedule video presentations. Also on the third floor is a large terrestrial globe ( 48 inches high and 38 inches in diameter ). The fourth floor is a replica of a ship's bridge with a complete set of ship's controls and a wide selection of electronic navigational aids, including an omega receiver, a satellite navigation system, a radio direction finder, a Loran-C receiver, a gyrocompass and many others. On the ground floor is a display of ship's engines, including a working model of a ship's diesel power plant, one of three in the world. there is also an AC generator, a main switchboard, a model of a steam turbine engine, rudders, a lubricating pump, an engine control console, pumps and ventilators for the handicapped, much like the elevators on merchant ships.

Tamkang University is proud to be able to share this legacy of nautical history. Admission to the museum is free.
